Helmets | Impact Vests | Sunglasses - Wing foiling Wisely

Wing foiling, an exciting blend of windsurfing, kiteboarding and foiling, requires appropriate safety gear to minimize risks associated with the sport. Key safety equipment includes helmets, impact vests, and sunglasses, each playing a crucial role in protecting you.

Helmet

Wearing a helmet for wingfoiling is not essential but highly recommended, at all stages of learning. Helmets designed for water sports provide protection against impacts from the board, the foil, or other water users. It is recommended to choose a lightweight helmet that fits securely, with adjustable straps for comfort. Look for helmets that are CE approved to ensure they meet safety standards.

Impact Vests

An impact vest is another critical piece of gear for wingfoilers. These vests are padded and provide buoyancy while protecting the torso from injuries during falls or collisions or impacts with the foil. A good impact vest should have strategically placed padding to safeguard vital areas such as the ribs and back. Your impact vest should be snug but comfortable to allow for full range motion.

Sunglasses

Protecting your eyes is important when wingfoiling, as bright sunlight and water splashes can impair vision. Sunglasses designed for water sports are recommended because they often feature durable lenses that resist impact and provide UV protection. Make sure your sunnies have a secure fit and always have a strap to prevent loss.

Additional Safety Gear

  • Wetsuits - Not only does it provide thermal protection but also additional padding against impacts. Definitely wear a full suit when learning wingfoiling! Your shins will thank you!
  • Knee Pads - With or without a full wetsuit, you might consider getting a pair of these to save the skin on your knees. I bought minimalist indoor volleyball knee pads, and they were great.
  • Booties - Neoprene booties or water shoes protect feet from injuries from anything on the bottom but also from accidentally kicking the foil.

Equipping yourself with the right safety gear is crucial for a safe and enjoyable wingfoiling experience. Prioritize quality and fit in your helmet, impact vest, and sunglasses to maximize protection on the water.
