Foilboards
Kite | Wing | Prone | Downwind | Wake
Foiling has rapidly gained popularity across various water sports, including winging, kite foiling, downwind foiling, SUP foiling, prone foiling, and wake foiling. This surge can be attributed to the unique experiences these activities offer and the advancements in board technology.
Types of Foilboards
Kite
In kite foiling, riders use a hydrofoil attached to a kite foilboard to glide over water. This style allows for riding in very light, often as low as 4 knots, which significantly extends the riding season. Kite foilboards like the Duotone Pace are designed with various constructions, including carbon composites that enhance performance and decrease weight.
Wing
Winging involves using a handheld wing while riding on a wing foilboard. The design of wing foiling boards often features a short, compact, lightweight, and square shape, which enhances efficiency and lift-off capabilities. Boards like the Appletree Appleslice or the North Seek are specifically engineered for this purpose, providing stability and speed for early take-off in light winds.
Prone
Prone foiling is done while lying on the board and paddling into waves. These boards are designed for performance with features that allow for tight turns and quick transitions. The Cabrinha Bump and the Unifoil Disco Butter prone boards exemplify this with their unique hull designs that enhances responsiveness during rides.
Downwind (DW)
Downwind foiling combines paddling or winging with the natural movement of ocean swells or wind fetch. DW Boards designed for this activity are typically longer and narrower to maximize efficiency and speed. They enable riders to catch small bumps and glide for extended periods without touching down. The AK Nomad and the Unifoil Nimitz are great examples of this category.
Wake
Wake foiling utilizes the wake generated by a boat to propel the rider forward without being tethered by a rope. This style mimics surf foiling but is performed in lakes or rivers. The wake foilboards used are similar to surfboards but equipped with hydrofoils that facilitate lift. Notable examples of these boards are the Slingshot WF-2 and the North Swell.
Why is Foiling Gaining so Much Traction?
The increasing popularity of foiling can be attributed to several factors:
- Versatility - Foilboards can be used across different water sports, making them appealing to a broad audience.
- Extended Riding Conditions - The ability to ride in lighter winds and smaller waves opens up more opportunities for sessions that were previously unavailable.
- Technological Advancements - Improvements in board construction materials and shaping have enhanced performance while reducing weight, making boards easier to handle.
- Portability - Inflatable foilboards have emerged as a practical option due to their ease of transport and storage, further attracting users.
- Foiling offers an exhilarating experience that combines elements of surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and flying above the water!
