Downwind (DW) Foilboards
Downwind foiling represents an innovative fusion of water sports technologies, combining elements of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), hydro foiling, and wind-powered propulsion. While the sport emerged from the convergence of traditional water activities like kiteboarding, windsurfing, wing foiling and prone foiling. It gained significant momentum in the late 2010s, with the development of specialized equipment, particularly the DW foilboard, that truly created a new discipline. The sport's evolution has been marked by continuous technical advancements, with 2023 witnessing the first downwind race in California.
The modern downwind foilboard stands out for its versatility and efficient design. These specialized boards, typically range from 6' to 9' in length and 18" to 26" in width, are crafted with carbon construction for optimal performance in both wing foiling and SUP foiling conditions. Their distinctive long, narrow shape with a displacement hull enables superior water penetration and efficient foil pumping, while the higher volume (usually 20L above body weight) ensures excellent stability.
