Cabrinha Moto X Review
The Moto X is Cabrinha’s newest iteration of a user-friendly “do-it-all” kite. With a lighter construction and newly redesigned delta-hybrid outline, it can perform at a high level with just about any riding style you throw at it!
While the Moto X shares its name with its predecessors, it should not be compared to its previous models. I have been flying the Cabrinha Moto for 3 years, and while the old Moto could be twitchy, unstable, and hyper aggressive if not in the right hands, the new Moto X feels smooth and consistent no matter what level of rider you are. It has light bar pressure yet a direct steering input, plenty of lift, smooth steering, and a consistent power stroke. Beginners will love its ease of use while experts will appreciate an endless skill ceiling due to its direct steering, stability and lift.
The Moto X is designed to be flown in all conditions, for all types or riding styles. I have broken up the review by riding style, as each requires different kite attributes that the Moto X caters to:
Moto X for Freeride/Big Air:
The Moto X blew me away with its lift, stability and turning speed for powered riding. While many three strut “do-it-all’ kites like to yank you up just to drop you like a stone, the Moto X boasts loads of lift and hang time while still feeling aggressive and powerful through kiteloops and fast turning inputs. Riding a 9m in 35 to 46 kts, the kite felt nearly as stable as a five strut dedicated big air kite. For those that aren’t into breaking their local Woo record, the Moto X still works like a charm; it’s fast turning speed and stability really shine for underpowered airs and other freeride maneuvers. While it has slightly less lift and hangtime than a dedicated big air kite, the Moto X provides when the wind picks up for a twin tip session!
Moto X for Kitefoil/Kitesurf:
The only difference between the Moto X and a dedicated drifting kite is its position in the wind window. The Moto X sits further forward in the window than a wave kite, so if you charge downwind the kite will front stall if left untouched. Essentially you have to position the kite deeper in the window before you start heading down the line on a wave, then the kite drifts just fine due to its new lighter construction. The kite’s intuitive and fast steering make this very easy to do. Once you move into stronger winds and smaller kites (<8m), this stops becoming apparent and the kite flies even if you charge downwind. For kitefoiling, the same principle applies. I personally spend the most time on a foil, and the Moto X has not failed me practicing advanced foil tricks such as around the world, walk the dog, and tack variations.
Moto X for Unhooked/Freestyle:
The Moto X isn’t a C-kite, and thus is not going to be ideal freestyle riding. If you occasionally would like to do a raley or maybe a handle pass off a kicker the kite won’t fall out of the sky, but for serious load-and-pop freestyle tricks a dedicated freestyle kite will better suit you.
In conclusion, if you are 100% positive that you will only be riding waves or only jumping to the moon, then kites like the Drifter or Nitro will be your best bet, but if there’s even a slight chance that you carry multiple types of boards in your quiver then there’s no reason not to go with the Moto X. I’ve never flown a kite that flies so consistently; it never does anything unexpected. It also feels the same across its size range so you don’t have to re-adjust your kite control when switching between sizes. Whether it’s your first time hooking into a kite or you are a seasoned veteran, the Moto X’s ease of use and versatility make it the perfect kite!
