Overall I love the 2018 Dakine option spreader bar and would recommend it to any wave kiters and foil kiters...I give it 4 out of 5 stars only due to the fact that you have to loosen and retighten straps to put on and take off harness
So I recently got the 2018 Dakine option spreader bar and had a chance to use it over the last two weekends and wanted to share my thoughts. First, it is easy to put it onto the harness by just loosening straps, removing old spreader bar and feeding option bar through and tightening. As far as riding with it is where the fun starts. It is really made for wave kiting by allowing the kite to swing from side to side along the rope while riding down the line on waves. It works really well for this and slides very smoothly along rope. I definitely recommend this for wave kiting. One added benefit I found was it also works great for foil kiting...I am new to foiling but the option spreader allows the kite to track further upwind while not twisting my body so it is really helping me learn to foil.
The only issue I have, and it's a small issue, is the only way to get the spreader bar to lock into the red clicker is to loosen the straps...click bar in then retighten straps which also means the only way to unclick spreader bar when done session is to again reloosen straps before you can take off harness. Not the end of the the world but a bit of an inconvenience. Overall I love the 2018 Dakine option spreader bar and would recommend it to any wave kiters and foil kiters...
Better than the 2017 but still a few issues.
Better than the 2017 but still a few things. First, it works great with foils. Slides smoothly from side to side, exactly what you want. The strap for locking the hook in place is not easy to swap in or out. I just took mine out and it works ok if you don't want the slide - my harness has one of the straps to stop the bar from tilting upwards and I put that through the guide holes on the hook piece that ride the rope (basically a third rope line). Keep it loose for foiling and tighten it up for twin tip. works pretty well. The quick release is better than the 2017 but in order to get the hook around the bar you have to really loosen up the straps - see the pic above and see how far back the hook goes toward the red piece. So it's much better in that once it's in it's locked (the 2017 red lock piece is a huge pain to get in and you NEED it or the bar will come off) but you have to really loosen the straps -so much for click and go. I turned it upside down and now it just snaps in and you only need to loosen/tighten the straps a tiny bit.
