Very stable foil for beginners.
I was pleasantly surprised by the 2019 Slingshot Hover Glide FKite Foil . I started foiling on a Slingshot Hover Glide NFP foil, which was super stable for a beginner but REALLY heavy. The FKite foil is everything the Hover Glide was, but it felt a little lighter. The lighter, carbon construction--it's not all carbon, but some carbon--of the FKite foil makes it a little easier for a smaller kiter like me to handle in the water. It's also a little easier to carry up the beach. The foil provides a beginner foiler great stability for learning. I liked everything about the FKite foil, but I wish it was a little faster now that I'm a little better at foiling. I have since tried the North Speedster foil, which is less stable but definitely faster and a little more fun. But for beginners, I would definitely recommend the FKite foil. It will help you work on the foundation skills you need--like getting up on the foil and riding comfortably--to become a better foiler. You can decide if you want a faster foil later.
Excellent foil system to learn on
I purchased the 2019 Slingshot hover Glide FKite Foil in August 2018.
It came with the 28 inch mast. I also purchased a 15 and 36 inch mast.
The 15 inch mast is a good learning tool when learning the foil because it is almost like riding a twin tip and you can get up and riding very quickly.
You only need the 15 inch mast for 1-2 sessions and then you will be up and riding on the 28 inch mast . This is an awesome foil to learn on, I had tried to foil on a Lift foil with a 36 inch mast 4-5 times prior to buying the Hover glide and I had no success even getting out of the water. I became very frustrated and was just going to quit trying to learn to foil. The Slingshot system sure changed that- the wing is so stable and you can get up on the foil at such low speeds. I was able to progress to heel-toe and toe-heel gibes after about 5-6 sessions. Once I started on the the 36 inch mast things even got easier as the foil wasn't so prone to breaching out of the water. The actual foil is very well made and appears to be made of some carbon composite material, it is pretty light weight. The mast is aluminum and very sturdy but is pretty heavy. The bolt system is very easy to assemble and appears to be well made. My only complaint with the assembly is the amount of work to change the masts. Since I leave the foil fully assembled in my vehicle , when I want to change the mast length I have to totally remove the plate from the board as well. It would be easier if the connection of the mast to the four bolt board plate was exteriorized so the changeover was easier.
There are few negatives , the mast is quite heavy so if you are progressing to bigger jumps or tricks this may be a limiting factor. Also , the foil wing material is quite soft and easily scratched or damaged. You have to be careful about letting the foil wing hit the bottom at all , even when it is just floating.
In Summary- great progressive foil system to learn to foil board on, good sturdy construction, a few small design issues and a bit of extra weight but these small issues are far out weighed by the positives
